Afrocentric: Millennial Style

At the age of 18, Mericle Blake-Hall didn’t choose modeling, modeling chose her. Growing up, Mericle wanted to be an athlete. Straight sports. Basketball, track, and volleyball. She even had dreams of being in the WNBA.

Standing tall at 5’10”, size 4, and with a beautiful smile Mericle was challenged to try modeling by family and friends.

Mericle accepted the challenge and fell in love with modeling. Behind the glitz and the glamour, Mericle says modeling is fast-paced and hard work.

Delving into modeling since 2018, Mericle has learned different techniques, runway skills, types of photography, networking, and organization. Most importantly, she has learned her worth. To build your portfolio and connections, Mericle said she started out working for free. But now with experience under her belt, she is compensated for her talent.

Mericle advises teenagers who aspire to model, that the key is to be confident in everything you do and network as much as you can.

Mericle plans to become a professional model and follow in the footsteps of Canadian model Coco Rocha. Mericle says her goal this year is to model in New York for New York Fashion Week.

Mericle says her favorite quote is “excuses are tools of incompetence used to build monuments of nothingness. Those who use them seldomly amount to anything.”
