Friends, Food, and Fitness: Mastering the Art of Dining Out

Going out to dinner with friends can be an exciting, enjoyable experience.  But if you’re not careful, a night of fun could also mean the end of a hard-fought diet and weeks of weight loss.

And we all know that when you’re having a grand old time with friends, it can often seem impossible not to indulge. But what if I told you that dining out didn’t have to sabotage your fitness goals? In this article, we will look at how, with some basic strategies and tools, managing social situations while staying fit is entirely possible!

Tip 1: Ask about the ingredients.

Have you ever sat down to eat a delicious meal and wondered what was in it? Asking about the ingredients in a dish is a great way to better understand what you're putting into your body. This can help you make better choices for your health and give you a new appreciation for the flavors and textures you're experiencing.

Tip 2: Focus on lean proteins and vegetables.

When dining out with friends, your first line of defense is the menu itself. Opt for dishes that feature lean proteins, such as grilled chicken, turkey, or fish. Definitely avoid the fried options!  Vegetables should be the focus of your meal, providing vital nutrients and fiber. Salads with various colorful veggies and lean proteins can be an excellent choice. Building your meal around these wholesome options sets a strong foundation for a balanced and nutritious dining experience that often aligns with your dietary goals.

Tip 3: Ask for salad dressings or sauces on the side.

Ask for salad dressings or sauces on the side so that you can control how much is added to your food. Salad dressings and sauces can be calorie-dense and are often liberally applied to restaurant dishes. Request that dressings and sauces be served on the side to control your calorie intake. This allows you to add them sparingly, dipping your fork or lightly drizzling to enhance the flavors without drowning your meal in excess calories.

Tip 4: Choose smaller portions when possible.

When it comes to eating, we often go for the large, satisfying portions that fill us up. But did you know that choosing smaller portions can help us control our weight and improve our overall health? By selecting moderate serving sizes, we can ensure we get the nutrients we need without overindulging. Not to mention, smaller dishes can help us savor and appreciate the flavors of our food more fully.

Tip 5: Don’t be afraid to split entrees with a friend.

We all know the feeling of being out eating and feeling pressured to order our own entrees. But did you know that splitting an entree with a friend not only saves you money but can also save you calories? Many restaurant portions are way larger than what we need, leading to overeating and unwanted weight gain. So, next time you're out with a buddy, don't be shy about suggesting this approach when dining out with friends. Your wallet and waistline will thank you.

So, the next time you find yourself at a restaurant with friends, remember these strategies to savor the best of both worlds—nourishing your body while relishing the company of good friends.
